Logan to Host Midwest Jamboree Sunday, October 21st

If the cold snap has turned your thoughts to basketball, John A. Logan College has a deal for you.  Logan will host the third annual Midwest Jamboree this Sunday, the 21st with 16 of the nation's top junior college teams competing at the SIU Recreation Center.

The event will begin at 12-noon with three games going on three courts at all times until 8 p.m.  There will be a total of 24 games.  Admission is $5.

"We've had good success in the last two years, but this year is absolutely the strongest field we have had," said Kyle Smithpeters, Logan coach.  "Ten of the teams had over 20 wins last season led by Vincennes with a record of 34-3 and Triton with a record of 33-4 including the D2 NJCAA national championship.  The 16 teams won 357 games."

The Jamboree will also feature some of the winningest coaches in the nation.  Gene Bess of Three Rivers has more wins than anybody in history with 1,208.  Jay Harrington of Southwestern Illinois has won 841 games.

John A. Logan, fresh from winning three straight games in the Vincennes Jamboree will face a formidable schedule on Sunday.  The Volunteers will open play at 2 p.m. on Court 2 against Missouri State-West Plains. At 5 p.m., the Vols go against Southeastern Iowa and at 6 p.m. the will play Highland.

"We will be playing three of the best teams in the country from three different states," Smithpeters said.  "It will be tough, but it should be fun!"
